Every so often, a creative challenge arrives at just the right time, that gentle nudge to see the world differently. Last week’s Paris Collage Collective prompt sparked one of those moments for me.
The image we were given, a bright, graphic cactus, made me think about perception, color, and how we interpret the familiar through a new lens. So, I went wandering through my photo archives and found myself returning to my favorite New Orleans trees: the ancient oaks.
But this time, I decided not to see them as brown and green.
I wanted to see them as memory and electricity.
Using filters, I transformed these local icons into something otherworldly, trees that hum with neon spirit. Purple Is the Live Oak, Rainbow Oak, Tree of Life in Blue, and See It Clearly Now each became little love letters to the surreal side of the South.
Sometimes, all it takes to wake up your creative eye is a shift in color.

Once, she wore a habit of devotion.
Now, she walks through New Orleans in silence, carrying prayers the world forgot to answer.
Sister Mercy believes every lost soul can still be redeemed, though she’s never quite sure if that includes herself.
