Also known as the black rockfish or marbled rockfish, the Black grouper is found in the western Atlantic from Massachusetts south to southern Brazil, including Bermuda, the Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas and Caribbean Sea. The black grouper prefers offshore and prefers rocky bottoms and coral reefs and lives offshore. The juvenile black grouper inhabit inshore areas in seagrass beds and mangroves.
