Long ago, in the strange and wonderful early days of Etsy, you could find almost anything.
Handmade earrings. Vintage teacups. Dollhouse furniture. Spell jars. Haunted objects. Possibly a cursed brooch. Definitely at least one listing that made you pause and whisper, “Wait. Is this real?”
One of my favorite little internet oddities from that era was the adoptable ghost cat.
For a few dollars, a seller would send you a printable certificate confirming that a ghost cat from the astral plane had been placed in your care. No shipping box. No litter. No mysterious scratching at the bedroom door.
You would not receive an actual cat, naturally. You would receive a printable certificate explaining that your new spectral companion had been dispatched to you from beyond the veil.
The sellers seemed sincere, which, to me, made it so much better.
I had almost forgotten about adoptable ghost cats until I posted about them on Threads. Someone immediately said they definitely needed one, which is when the dangerous little door in my brain opened.
Because of course I thought: Wait. I can do that, but make it art.
Each one is an original little ink creature: part cat, part spirit, part scribbled moon-shadow. They are strange. They are sweet. They have enormous eyes and questionable histories.
Each Adoptable Ghost Cat will be an original Unbelonging with its own name, personality, and tiny rescue story. These are not mass-produced spectral companions. Each one is a strange little original, summoned in ink and sent looking for the right haunted windowsill.
They do not require food.
They do not shed.
They may stare into corners
.They may sleep on your chest in dreams.
They may gently rearrange the emotional furniture of your home.
They are excellent for people who are allergic to cats, people who already have too many cats, people who miss a cat, people who love odd little creatures, and people who understand that sometimes art is better when it comes with a story and a suspicious set of eyes.
The first Unbelonging Ghost Cats are now beginning to appear.
They have been waiting in the Astral Plane for someone with a soft heart, a good sense of humor, and room in their home for something that does not entirely exist.
